Should I really carry around a travel bag to avoid being mugged when I go to London or use a regular purse?
Ive been told to use a money belt and an across the shoulder travel purse when I go to London. I think the purse is ugly and I like my nicer purse. Is it really worth it to use it to avoid being mugged? I mean do almost all the females in London go around with a purse like that then?? Just how bad is the mugging and pickpocketting crime rate over there and what should I be doing?
I have seen many women in touristy area carry bags that fit their shoulders in such a way that the bag itself is under their arm, and can be held in close to their bodies with their elbow. That is the type of bag I would recommend.
Do not leave your passport in that back, wear a belt bag or money belt for your passport and emergency phone numbers.
It's not so much how bad the rate of petty crime is, it's how easy you make it for them. If your bag looks hard to take, they won't take it. But if you make it easy for them, they'll have a go. And it won't be personal, your bag will merely be an opportunity. They just want to be able to grab it and run, they don't want to fight or to hurt you physically. And they are fast ....
